Updated: May 30, 2023

  1. Plan Ahead: Start planning your training schedule and meet preparation well in advance. Make a checklist.

  2. Nutrition: Proper nutrition is crucial for optimal performance. Focus on consuming a balanced diet rich in complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats. Stay hydrated and avoid sugary or processed foods.

  3. Rest and Recovery: Getting enough sleep and taking rest days is just as important as training. Make sure to schedule in rest and recovery days to allow your body to recover and repair.

  4. Visualize Success: Visualization is a powerful tool that can help boost confidence and focus. Picture yourself swimming your best and achieving your goals. Visualize being comfortable in every situation, even the unpredictable ones. Visualize the joy you feel racing, the nervous excitement that reminds you that your body is getting ready to do what it loves.

  5. Mental Preparation: In addition to visualization, practice other mental preparation techniques such as positive self-talk and goal setting. Set realistic, achievable goals and focus on the process rather than the outcome.

  6. Race Strategy: Have a solid race strategy in place for each event. Work with your coach to develop a plan that plays to your strengths and addresses any weaknesses.

  7. Technique: Fine-tune your technique in the weeks leading up to the competition. Work on refining your strokes, starts, and turns but try not to do anything drastic. It's not wise to make big changes before the meet. Stick to your seasonal plan and go for it.

  8. Pace Work: Incorporate pace work into your training. This involves swimming at race pace or slightly faster for specific distances to improve your ability to maintain speed and endurance.

  9. Equipment: Make sure your goggles, swim cap, and swimsuit are in race-ready condition.

  10. Mental Toughness: Lastly, develop mental toughness and resilience. Competition can be stressful, so learn to stay calm under pressure and focus on what you can control. Most know, we like to say, "Smile!" Let gratitude fuel your excellence.

By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared to compete at your next meet. Remember to stay focused, TRUST your training and have fun!
