“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” - Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)
As elite athletes, the dedication and discipline required to excel can be all-consuming. Training, competition, and the relentless pursuit of excellence can often lead to physical and mental exhaustion. Olympic swimmers Adam Petty and Caeleb Dressel have recently exemplified the importance of stepping away from the rigors of training to focus on restoration and spiritual growth. This decision reflects a profound truth: even Jesus understood the necessity of getting away and restoring.
Jesus demonstrated the importance of rest and restoration throughout His ministry. Despite the increasing demands of His work, Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:15-16). After the apostles returned from their mission, He encouraged them to come away by themselves to a quiet place and rest (Mark 6:30-32). Following the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, Jesus went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray, finding peace and restoration in creation (Matthew 14:23). These examples show that Jesus prioritized time with God and recognized the need for physical and spiritual renewal. The break taken by the two appears to have rekindled their joy and enthusiasm for time spent in the water and in competition. Their performances at the Paris Olympic Games still reflect excellence.
Adam and Caeleb's decision to take a season for restoration reminds us that our bodies and spirits are interconnected. Just as muscles need time to repair and grow stronger after intense training, our spirits require moments of stillness and reflection to thrive.
Spiritual growth is integral to overall well-being. Taking time away from the demands of competition to focus on spiritual health can lead to a deeper understanding of purpose and identity. Jesus invites us to find rest in Him, promising that in His presence, we will find true peace and restoration.
Consider your current training regimen and the demands it places on you. Are there moments when you feel overwhelmed or exhausted? How can you incorporate periods of rest and spiritual renewal into your routine? Perhaps you don't completely step away, but instead, you find opportunities to integrate micro-rests—brief periods throughout the day and week when you set aside your cup to simply relax, rest, and savor the moment.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank You for the example of rest and restoration that Jesus set. Help me to recognize the importance of balance in my life. Grant me the wisdom to take time for spiritual growth and renewal, even amidst the demands of training and competition. May I find peace and strength in Your presence, and may my life reflect Your grace and love.
