Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58 (ESV)
It's getting close to a new school year. This new chapter of your life is an exciting journey filled with opportunities, challenges, and growth. As you step into this new environment, let's reflect on a powerful metaphor to guide your faith journey: the tetherball.
Imagine a tetherball game. The ball, attached by a rope to a pole, represents you. The pole stands firm and unyielding, symbolizing God and your faith. Life in college will inevitably hit you with various challenges, ideas, and emotions—just like the ball gets struck from different angles.
These hits represent the athletic or academic pressures, new concepts, social dynamics, and personal struggles you'll face. At times, these impacts may be intense, leaving you feeling confused, overwhelmed, or even questioning your beliefs. It's natural to encounter these moments; they're part of the process of growth and learning.
However, the crucial element that keeps the ball from flying away into uncertainty is the rope anchoring it to the pole. This rope symbolizes your faith. When firmly anchored to God, no matter how hard or unexpected the hits are, you remain connected, secure, and able to navigate the swings of life without losing your way.
But what happens if the ball becomes untethered? Without the anchor of faith, you risk being flung into unsafe and unpredictable territories. You might find yourself caught up in environments or emotional experiences that God never intended for you. The absence of that connection leaves you vulnerable to being "kicked around" by life's challenges, losing the stability and security that faith provides. Being thrust into the unknown can make fear a dominant force in your life, potentially leading to heightened anxiety or even depression.
As you embark on your college/school journey, remember the importance of staying anchored in your faith. Here are a few ways to keep your connection strong. Don't forget to practice:
Daily Devotion: Spend time each day in prayer and reading Scripture. This practice will ground you in God's truth and strengthen your relationship with Him.
Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can support, encourage, and hold you accountable. Join a campus ministry, Bible study, or Christian group. This practice will help you when you feel discouraged.
Worship: Regularly attend church services and worship gatherings. Worshiping with others reinforces your faith and reminds you of God's presence. Engaging in this practice can boost the beneficial chemicals in your brain and foster a sense of gratitude, both of which have been demonstrated to promote a heightened mood and a positive perspective. Worship shifts your emotional and mental experiences.
Service: Find ways to serve others. Volunteering and helping those in need reflect Christ's love and keep you rooted in His mission. Research has shown that helping others can ignite a sense of purpose and diminish the tendency to dwell on our own self-pity or low spirits. This practice will lead to vital experiences.
Reflection: Take time to reflect on your experiences and how God is working in your life. Journaling can be a helpful tool to process your thoughts and see God's hand in your journey. This practice can offer profound insights into your personal thoughts and behavioral patterns. College students are frequently advised to keep a thought journal to assess their daily thoughts, questioning their validity and usefulness. Subsequently, they should confront these thoughts and substitute them with constructive ones, which often involves reinterpreting the beliefs that adversely affect their experiences in a more positive light.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I begin this new chapter in my life, help me to stay firmly anchored in You. When life's challenges come, remind me that my faith in You is my security and strength. Surround me with a community of believers who can support and encourage me. Keep me grounded in Your word and guide me in Your ways. Thank You for being my steadfast anchor. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Stay tethered to God, and you will find the strength and stability to thrive in all circumstances. Enjoy the journey, and trust that He is with you every step of the way.
