Memorial Day Weekend

Updated: May 29, 2023

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate three days of celebrations and joyous occasions. Twenty-eight years ago, I, too, was caught up in the excitement, planning my wedding on this very weekend. Happy anniversary to all those who made the same choice! Over time, the holiday became synonymous with birthday celebrations, barbecues and moments of relaxation. However, it wasn't until a poignant moment of witnessing the mourning of a lost marine that I realized I had lost sight of the true purpose and significance of this weekend.

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the men and women who made the ULTIMATE sacrifice in service to our country. It is a moment to pay tribute to their selflessness and reflect upon the freedoms we enjoy today because of their bravery.

As we pay tribute to the fallen, let us remember the families who have endured immeasurable loss. Let us extend our support and compassion to those who carry the weight of their loved ones' sacrifice.

While Memorial Day is not directly tied to the sport of swimming or Olympic swimmers, it holds significant meaning for athletes and individuals who strive for excellence in their respective fields, including swimmers. Memorial Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by brave men and women who, not only fought for our freedom, but lost their lives, which in turn allows athletes to pursue their dreams and compete on an international stage like the Olympics.

The dedication, discipline, and perseverance exhibited by Olympic swimmers parallel the values of courage and commitment demonstrated by those who have served in the military. On this day, swimmers and the entire sports community can reflect on the profound gratitude we owe to those who have selflessly given their lives, recognizing that the freedoms they fought for contribute to the pursuit of athletic excellence and the opportunity to represent our country in the realm of sports.

May this Memorial Day be a solemn and meaningful occasion as we pay tribute to those who have paved the way for the liberties we cherish today.

“No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation.”- General Douglas MacArthur
